2006/07 courses
I’m supporting the Resource Based Learning module with a wiki this year, and I’m hoping we might get some teaching patterns defined and discussed. Time again will tell. I’m using wikispaces.com to run the site – wysiwyg editing but no autolinking alas.
I’ve started a new GCSE Maths blog to see if the comments can be used to build a reflective practice framework with student input.
I’m using the Access Maths blogger account to support two classes: one a day release group and the other a full time group. I’m hoping I can get communication between the groups going.
I’ll be using Moodle for a Study Skills course for the BTEC Award Forensic Science students. The full time students get 2 hours per week of workshops, and the evening students will be able to use the same Moodle course to boost skills.
2005/06 courses
I’m using blogs published by blogger for most of the support pages below. Blogger is free, does not have intrusive adverts on pages, and now allows picture storage and display. The only thing missing is file storage for PDFs and so on. Keeping a blog page is easy and I’m trying to interest a significant number of teachers in providing one for a class this year. In the case of the Forensic ICT blogs, the page will act as an entry point to more extensive materials held in Moodle.

2004/05 courses
- Forensic Maths – support diary for students taking Unit 6 of the BTEC National Cert/Diploma Applied Science (Forensic Science). The assignment is vocationally oriented, and the focus is on practical application of Maths to the situations.
- Forensic ICT – support diary for students taking Unit 33 of the BND/C Forensic Science course. Most activities are hosted in Moodle but the diary does provide recent examples and news stories that illustrate principles. The previous run of this Unit was supported using a forum.
- Access Maths – support diary for students on the Access Maths Level 2 Module. Links to BBC Skillswise and other useful pages.
Previous years
- Forensic Maths 2003/04 – last years Forensic Maths diary. Still has useful links to sites and incriminating photographs. This diary was written using MSFrontPage
- Numeracy quizzes in Hot Potatoes – a partially completed project around providing a range of quizzes for Level 1 Numeracy Core Curriculum students. If you landed here while searching for Adult Core Numeracy materials, a visit to the amazing skills workshop Web site by Maggie Harnew might be more useful.
- Astronomy Taster – Astronomy taster course written and delivered in a community centre. Based on some NOCN courses devised in conjunction with the BBC.
- Web Server Applications – a short course designed to introduce people who already have simple Web sites to the joys of server side applications. The main focus was on configuring Web Server applications for use and then uploading and testing them. If I ran this course now, I’d probably include more php/MySql based systems such as WordPress and phpBB.
